Join the Malaya Movement along with the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines, US Pinoys for Good Governance, and The Migrant Center at St. Francis of Assisi for a forum with speakers exploring the human rights crisis and repression under President Rodrigo Duterte, with a special focus on political prisoners. This forum is a part of a series of events for International Human Rights Day (IHRD) 2019 investigating human rights and democracy in the Philippines. * Extra judicial killings, disappearances, and red-tagging of human rights defenders and activists have become all too commonplace. President Duterte’s failed drug war is awash in blood with over 30,000 killed. Peace advocates and faith leaders are threatened, killed, or called “terrorists”. Critical media personalities and publications are maligned, harassed with trumped-up charges to incite a climate of fear amongst those who dare express dissent or opposition to the alarming policies and statements of President Duterte and his administration. Even as the democratic space shrinks to a stranglehold, the Filipino people remain resilient and continue to fight back against fascism. * Speakers will cover the significance of Senator Leila de Lima's 1000th day of detention, last month's crackdown on progressive organizations that included mass arrests of members of BAYAN and GABRIELA, the spike in political arrests--which totalled 629 political prisoners by the end of November 2019, as well as Duterte's overall repression of his critics and those clamoring for democracy and human rights in the Philippines. According to lawmakers, 382 of all political prisoners in the Philippines (about 61 percent) have been arrested since the beginning of Duterte’s presidency in 2016 alone. * Learn about the crucial role that US-based Filipinos and allies can play in our legislative advocacy efforts to hold the Duterte administration accountable for crimes against the Filipino people. Let us uphold democracy and human rights in the Philippines and oppose fascism, tyranny, and repression in the Philippines and across the Philippine diaspora!
