The human rights situation in the Philippines continues to worsen. During his November 2017 visit, US President Trump expressed support for Philippine President Duterte’s “War on Drugs”, war on Moro and Lumad peoples, and counter-insurgency war. Since the beginning of this “drug war”, 13,000 victims have already been claimed—a number which includes the killing of the poor and extra-judicial killings of human rights advocates and faith-based leaders, in addition to increased incidents of harassment, evacuations, and massacres of peasants and indigenous communities.
This sudden and relentless onslaught of killings and other reprehensible means of political repression harken back to the days of recent past, when under former President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo the killings of community organizers, social justice advocates, journalists, and faith-based leaders were daily news. Duterte’s cancellation of the peace talks and declaration of activists and revolutionary forces as “terrorists” even foreshadows the return of a fascist dictatorship akin to that of former President Ferdinand Marcos’s Martial Law just decades ago. Then as it is now, these killings and political repression reflect a US-backed regime hell-bent on protecting the socio-economic status quo, eliminating with impunity those actively opposed to it.
From April 24—27, as part of their Stop the Killings Speaking Tour 2018: The People’s Caravan for Peace and Justice in the Philippines, representatives from the International Coalition for Human Rights in the Philippines (ICHRP) will deliver a set of discussions in several community spaces around New Jersey and New York City, calling for support from local human rights advocates to devise a plan of action that will stop the US government from funding the Duterte Administration’s repression of its own people.
Join ICHRP-US and Malaya Movement as we call for the deepest solidarity with the Filipino people and the broadest opposition to stop the killings, end US military aid, and to prevent another fascist dictatorship in the Philippines!
